Energy

Prosperity comes from using resources wisely.

If you've got it, use it

Colorado has abundant natural resources, so much so that we're essentially sitting on a pile of gold. Unfortunately, some people think it's better to endure hardship, poverty, and privation than to poke a hole in the ground and take out the wealth-providing minerals.

I have little sympathy for a kneejerk "no" to any and all use or development of our natural riches.

Protect the environment

However, environmental pollution and the ruin of wild places is unacceptable. Too many businesses seek to externalize their costs. That is, they will exploit a mineral resource without regard to environmental cleanup and reclamation, which is a cost to the rest of us.

I believe strongly that we need to force mining and energy companies to internalize all of their costs, i.e., to protect the environment. At the same time I believe wholeheartedly that, beyond making sure that costs are internalized, the government should otherwise allow energy exploration and mining activities.

These are compatible goals, and as your Representative I will strive to make sure both are accomplished.
