Entrepreneurial Resourcefulness

February 16, 2010

Yesterday was a busy one. Launching a political campaign requires logistical planning and strategic thought. And when life throws in a major monkey wrench, it helps to have a competent and resourceful team. There’s a lesson to be learned here.

As John Colson of the Post Independent notes, we had a major glitch at just the wrong time. Knowing that we had just a small amount of work left to do to get the website up and ready, I had planned to send out a press release announcing my candidacy by the end of the day yesterday. However, about midday, my web designers let me know that the electricity had gone out in their town that morning and they couldn’t do much work.

I couldn’t believe it! Now the planned timing of the announcement and the ability of folks to read beyond the news reports by going to my website were lost.

I decided that I had to make the announcement anyway, so I sent out a press release to that effect, noting that the website would be up later in the week since I had no way to know how long it might take my designers to get up and running. Who knew that my designers would move locations, find some internet access, make the final design changes, deal with yet another last minute technical glitch (caused by a third party—I won’t bore you with details), and deliver superb work—all within just a few hours?!

Now that’s entrepreneurial resourcefulness of a kind that makes me proud to live in Colorado! I don’t know my designers’ politics, and it doesn’t matter. They saw a problem, made no excuses, worked their tails off, and delivered. And seeing them work confirms what I already knew:

If we—as citizens, as legislators, as community members—work the problem, we can make recovery begin right here in Colorado.
